  • Animated timeline shows how Silicon Valley became a $2.8 trillion neighborhood

Silicon Valley is a name that is synonymous with the technology industry, but when and how did this small area of California become the center of the tech world? The area's transformation happened gradually, over a period of more than 100 years. Here's how. Silicon Valley is an almost $3 trillion neighborhood thanks to companies like Apple, Google, and Tesla. But it wasn't always this way. In the late 1800s, San Francisco's port helped make it a hub of the early telegraph and radio industries. In 1909, San José became home to one of the US's first radio stations. In 1933, the Navy purchased Moffett Field to dock and maintain the USS Macon. This made Moffett Field a major hub for the early days of the aerospace industry. Many scientists and researchers all found work in the area. In 1939,...

Driving Downtown Streets - Santa Clara Street - San Jose California USA - Episode 82. Starting Point: Santa Clara Street https://goo.gl/maps/CocQbCWSquD2 . Silicon Valley is a nickname for the southern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area, in the northern part of the U.S. state of California. The "valley" in its name refers to the Santa Clara Valley in Santa Clara County, which includes the city of San Jose and surrounding cities and towns. San Jose's location within the booming local high tech industry earned the city the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley". The word "silicon" originally referred to the large number of silicon chip innovators and manufacturers in the region, but the area is now the home to many of the world's largest high-tech corporations, including the headquarters of 39 businesses in the Fortune 1000, and thousands of startup companies. Silicon Valley also accounts for one-third of all of the venture capital investment in the United States, which has helped it to become a leading hub and startup ecosystem for high-tech innovation and scientific development. It was in the Valley that the silicon-based integrated circuit, the microprocessor, and the microcomputer, among other key technologies, were developed. As of 2013, the region employed about a quarter of a million information technology workers. As more high-tech companies were established across the Santa Clara Valley, and then north towards the Bay Area's two other major cities, San Francisco and Oakland, the "Silicon Valley" name eventually came to refer to all high-tech businesses in the region. The term is now generally used as a synecdoche for the American high-technology economic sector. The name also became a global synonym for leading high-tech research and enterprises, and thus inspired similar named locations, as well as research parks and technology centers with a comparable structure all around the world. San Jose is the third-largest city by population in California, the tenth-largest by population in the United States, and the county seat of Santa Clara County. San Jose is the largest city in the Bay Area and the largest city in Northern California. By the 1990s, San Jose's location within the booming local high tech industry earned the city the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley". San Jose is now considered to be a global city, and notable for its affluence and high cost of living. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population of the city to be 1,015,785 as of July 1, 2014. Economy The large concentration of high-technology engineering, computer, and microprocessor companies around San Jose has led the area to be known as Silicon Valley. As the largest city in the valley, San Jose has billed itself "the capital of Silicon Valley." Area schools such as the University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Santa Cruz, San Jose State University, San Francisco State University, California State University, East Bay, Santa Clara University, and Stanford University pump thousands of engineering and computer science graduates into the local economy every year. San Jose lists many companies with 1,000 employees or more, including the headquarters of Adobe, Altera, Brocade Communications Systems, Cadence Design Systems, Cisco Systems, eBay, Lee's Sandwiches, Lumileds, PayPal, Rosendin Electric, Sanmina-SCI, and Xilinx, as well as major facilities for Becton Dickinson, Ericsson, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, Kaiser Permanente, KLA Tencor, Lockheed Martin, Nippon Sheet Glass, Qualcomm, and AF Media Group. The North American headquarters of Samsung Semiconductor are located in San Jose. Approximately 2000 employees will work at the new Samsung campus which opened in 2015. Other large companies based in San Jose include Altera, Atmel, CEVA, Cypress Semiconductor, Echelon, Extreme Networks, Harmonic, Integrated Device Technology, Maxim Integrated, Micrel, Move, Netgear, Novellus Systems, Oclaro, OCZ, Online Trading Academy, Quantum, SunPower, Sharks Sports and Entertainment, Supermicro, Tessera Technologies, TiVo, Ultratech, and VeriFone. Sizable government employers include the city government, Santa Clara County, and San Jose State University. Acer's United States division has its offices in San Jose. Prior to its closing, Netcom had its headquarters in San Jose. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Valley https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jose,_California

Mercedes F 015 The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is held throughout Las Vegas at the beginning of every year and is one of the biggest electronics show in the world. Companies from all over the world meet to show off their latest innovations. Car companies started coming as exhibitors about a decade ago, and this year almost every major car company showed up, including Ford, Honda, Hyundai, and Mercedes. The latter company debuted several self-driving vehicles, including the F 0158 full concept car that is a myriad of futuristic technological innovations. The car is fully autonomous and is powered, in theory, by a fuel cell hybrid powertrain for up to 684 emission free miles. The interior features a lounge style cabin with swiveling front seats that automatically turn to the optimal angle for entering and exiting the vehicle. A remarkable concept to be sure, but it will take a long time to get from being technically possible to being commercially viable. We probably won’t see the F 015 anytime soon, though it's a safe bet that we will see self-driving vehicles in commercial use in the near future. Autonomous technology will change the way cars are used, from the way they are driven to the way they are integrated and used within society. 5. AV Road Trip The Alliance for Transportation Innovation or ATI announced plans early this year to have a coast to coast autonomous vehicle road trip that will begin in late January in Atlanta, Georgia. Stops on the AV tour include New Orleans, Arlington Texas, Los Angeles and San Jose California. ATI hopes to bring autonomous and other innovative technologies into the transportation industry as quickly as possible to safely and efficiently deliver goods while eliminating the human errors that cause horrific and fatal accidents across the world. 4. RideTap Developers launched a pilot for this real-time ride options app in Portland, Oregon in May of 2016. The app could offer users a list of ride options in their area, from a bus to an Uber to a bike sharing option and find them the quickest possible, or most affordable route to get the user where they need to go. The app is hoping to capitalize off of the trend of more and more young people being inclined to use public transportation or ride sharing options as opposed to owning a vehicle. 3. Robot Taxi in Paris Sea Bubbles will be flying on the Seine River in Paris, at least for test runs this spring. A yachtsman and a Swedish windsurfer came up with this bubble shaped transportation alternative that can fit four passengers and a driver. The vehicle would be an app and work much like Uber or Lyft. So far funding has been promising as the creators have been able to raise over five hundred thousand dollars from various backers, including the French government. The boats, which look like something out of Minority Report, float two feet above the water and can reach speeds of nearly twenty miles per hour. Once the company fully develops the Sea Bubble, they hope to go to other cities like London or Geneva. The propulsion system of the craft is powered by electricity, making it zero emission and soundless. If tests go well and the company that built the Sea Bubble secures more money, we could be seeing them around the world in the future. The creators hope to come up with a viable version of the Sea Bubble that is entirely operated by a robot. 2. TomTom Go TomTom has been making car navigation products for years, and their newest GPS device, which the company unveiled early this year is incredible. The TomTom Go has software that can be updated using Wi-Fi with no computer connectivity. The device can learn driver’s habits and predict their destinations. It becomes familiar with regularly driven commutes and can provide alternate routes based on traffic situations. They also integrate with smartphones by reading text messages out loud and allowing hands-free calling. 1. Pilotless Drone The EHang personal minicopter is designed to transport one human being without the use of a pilot. The passenger would choose a point on a map to travel to, and the drone would comply. All that the passenger would have to do after that is sit and wait to arrive at their destination. The vehicle was unveiled early last year at CES and caused quite a stir. While experts are unsure if the vehicle and transportation system would catch on with a price tag of at least two hundred thousand dollars, the drone was given test clearance by the state of Nevada in June.

The Tech Museum of Innovation is a science and technology center located in San Jose, California. Our mission is to inspire the innovator in everyone. This year, we are trying to do just that with synthetic biology through our participation in iGEM! This is the first time a museum has entered the iGEM competition We are excited to prototype new ways in which we, as an institution, can offer novel activities to excite and educate our community. Therefore, the goal of our project is to create an exhibit that engages the public in a hands-on synthetic biology experience. Importantly, we want to allow people of all ages and with no biology background to become part of our museum iGEM team. To tackle these goals, we are developing an interactive activity in which visitors are involved in both making and analyzing multi-colored bacteria. We hope to use this project to get people interested in and excited about the power of synthetic biology. Colored bacteria are cool!

In 1939, the Ames Research Center was founded in the area, and it became home to the world's largest wind tunnel in 1949. Also in 1939, William Hewlett and Dave Packard founded Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, which originally made oscilloscopes. Then, during World War II, HP made radar and artillery technology. At this point, computers were about the size of a room. In the 1940s, William Shockley coinvented the transistor while at Bell Labs. The transistor is now known as the computer processor. In 1956, Shockley left Bell and founded his own company — Shockley Semiconductor Labs. It was the first company to make transistors out of silicon and not germanium. The company was founded in Mountain View, California — so Shockley could be closer to his sick mother. Shockley's company employed many recent grads of Stanford. In 1957, eight Shockley employees grew tired of his demeanor and left the company. Shockley called the group the "Traitorous Eight." They partnered with Sherman Fairchild to create Fairchild Semiconductor. In the early 1960s, Fairchild helped make computer components for the Apollo program. Later in the decade, many of the "Traitorous Eight" left Fairchild and founded their own companies. Including Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce, who in 1968 founded their own company in Santa Clara called Intel. Soon after, other ex-Fairchild employees and "Traitorous Eight" members helped found AMD, Nvidia, and venture fund Kleiner Perkins. In 1969, the Stanford Research Institute became one of the four nodes of ARPANET. A government research project that would go on to become the internet. In 1970, Xerox opened its PARC lab in Palo Alto. PARC invented early computing tech, including ethernet computing and the graphical user interface. In 1971, journalist Don Hoefler titled a 3-part report on the semiconductor industry "SILICON VALLEY USA." The name stuck. In the 1970s, companies like Atari, Apple, and Oracle were all founded in the area In the 1980s, Silicon Valley became the widely accepted center of the computer industry. eBay, Yahoo, PayPal, and Google are just some of the companies founded in the area in the 1990s With Facebook, Twitter, Uber, and Tesla joining them the following decade. The growth of the tech industry in the area continues to this day. When the Freedom of Information Act was enacted in 1966, no one considered the vast quantity of information that would need to be accessed or the complexity of keeping private data private, while making public data accessible. Legacy content management systems weren't designed to manage information with these demands. Not to mention integration with other key systems. This is where open standards based solutions like Alfresco and Drupal provide value. This presentation will illustrate how solutions based on these technologies can: - Create multiple methods to receive/create data - Properly identify and catalog data - Maintain proper security and control around all personal information - Develop approval processes for accepting and reviewing data - Redact personal information while sharing public data. - Access data where it is needed, when it is needed, and on the right device.
